Can knuckle push-ups be harmful to your knuckles? I agree you will
have some scars, but anything beyond that?
I am not a specialist, but I think that this type of push-up makes your
wrists stable, thus decreasing the possibility of an injury. Moreover,
your body is going to be a bit higher, so you are going to exercise
through a wider range of motion.

How are you going to scar your knuckles doing pushups? Are you doing your
pushups on gravel or broken glass? You should be able to do them on the
front two knuckles on a wooden floor with no ill effects.

Yes. They will chaff from dragging on the pavement (in your case).

Please describe knuckle push-ups. I realize that you rest your weight
only on two knuckles (index and middle fingers) of each fist. I just
tried doing these on a rubber mat and found that I was really doing
them on the full surfaces of my fists. I think my wrist strength is
OK so I want to know if there any technique tips I need to keep in
mind

Knuckle push-up is a push-up where you rest your weight on the knuckles
of both of your fists.
The reason I am concerned about my knuckles is that perhaps knuckle
joints may be damaged, due to all the weight that rests on them.

Don't worry, if it happens you can get a knuckle transplant.

I do mine on two hot plates, turned on high of course. This also adds extra
height for greater ROM.

Knuckle pushups are a mainstay of many martial arts and have been
practiced, without injury and with good results, for a long, long time.
No need to worry about injuring your knuckles, but please follow common
sense and be sure you have your doctor's OK to exercise in this manner,
and be sure you ease into them. If you find them hard on your knuckles
at first, only do a few of them at a time and only every few days until
you, and in particular your knuckles, get used to them.
The benefits to wrist strength are real and worth the effort.
The tradition in some martial arts is to use the index and middle
knuckles with the hands in a line, i.e., in the same arrangement is if
you were picking up a barbell with an overhand grip, and also to work on
them using the hands turned out 90 degrees and resting on the other two
knuckles (of the ring and pinkie fingers).
How hard these are on your knuckles depends, for obvious reasons, on how
heavy you are. I've done them on concrete several times and lived to
tell the tale. :)
Ask on news:rec.martial-arts for more if needed.

I used to push up off the ground with every third pushup and land back on my
knuckles...on the concrete floor in my garage. But then, I had knuckles the
size of golf balls at that point. They're somewhat normal now however. :)

You need to stop by my TFC server and play again. I was out of town

Nice to hear from you John!
I broke up with her first week in January. She would go through these moody
swings, and I got tired of it. Yes, I know ALL women are moody. But this
was bad. Or...maybe it was I wasn't willing to put up with it for her. lol

Actually, I still have it in my favorites. In fact I looked for you last
night, but only bots were on. Problem is that I don't sit down to play
until around 10pm pst. You're in bed by then I'm sure. And...I've been
playing a lot of Counter-Strike Source.
But I tell you what. Jake (my 14 yr old) is here through Monday with his
computer. We'll try to both jump on server Saturday night around 9pm pst.
You up for that?

All work and no play makes Larry a dull boy!
