Assuming I have a busy schedule and want to keep equipment simple and
portable. What's the best way to exercise with three pairs of dumbbels,
1.5kg, 3kg, 5kg. I don't want to be an Arnold, just toned and youthful.

I'm thinking perhaps compound exercises first and foremost. Every other
day or an alternating daily (what's the best way to alternate?
upper/lower or flexor/extensor?). Starting with the 5kgs after a light
warmup and then exercising till fatigued, then immediately putting them
down and picking up the 3kgs, exercising with them till fatigued, then
immediately putting them down and picking up the 1.5kgs, exercising
till fatigued.

What do you guys think?

Also, is stretching any good? I recall reading somewhere that it isn't.
Also, how about morning exercise, any harm in that? I find if I
exercise in the evening it spikes up my arousal and I can't sleep early
enough or read well.

Thanks.

How about you fill some gallon milk jugs & deadlift them?

Or put a sandbag in a backpack and squat.

You don't have to have a barbell or heavy dumbbells to move heavy
things. I've been known to squat & benchpress my kids. (Warning:
they're not fond of the clean & jerk.)

I suppose you could take your dumbbells and walk around with them.
I've heard that some people have had good experiences with this sort
of training. Googling for "Heavy Hands" should lead you in the right
direction.

You aren't going to build muscle with 5kg dumbbells though. You're
not likely to get "toned and youthful either." Weight training is the
best way to change the way you look, whether you want to lose weight
or gain muscle, but you have to lift something that's actually heavy.

This sort of routine isn't likely to build any substantial muscle
mass, it's essentially a cardio workout masquerading as strength
training. Worse, unless you plan on doing lots of what would
essentially end up being bodyweight squats it is a cardio workout that
isn't targeting the larger muscle mass in your lower body. If you
want to build endurance and burn calories you should run or walk (take
the weights along if you want), or do something else that is going to
get your legs moving.

Let's just say that the whole subject is complicated and leave it at
that. If you have a limited amount of time to work out then there's
probably a better use of your time than stretching.

Lots of people exercise in the mornings. Is it the ideal time to work
out? Probably not. However, I personally like starting the day out
with a workout, and that's when working out fits into my schedule. If
I was trying to make the Olympic weightlifting team I might
re-prioritize.

I'm not touching that.

Haha. I meant my adrenergic arousal, not sexual.

Good idea, IMHO. Also don't forget that strength can be built with no
weights at all, it's just a bit more work. Handstand pushups,
one-legged squats, one-armed pushups - plenty of things one can work on
without additional resistance just by tweaking the leverage. You could
spend $6 for an ab wheel and get an excellent midsection workout from
that, too. Another simple equipment choice is
http://www.ringtraining.com - rings that are portable. As long as
you've got something you can throw them over, even a piece of playground
equipment or a sturdy tree branch, you can do plenty of different
things.
