You don't need to get into shape.

Hmm, "macho thing". Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and
let people think you might be intelligent vs opening it and making it
clearly be known that you are ignorant and insecure.

Misc.fitness.GettingIntoShape
At least some of us are here because we want to be strong and healthy,
not look at ourselves in the mirror and pronounce ourselves "in shape."
And there is nothing more fundamental in the world of strength than
picking something heavy up off the ground. I'm training for a
strength/endurance sport competition now and not only don't need to
deadlift, I probably shouldn't, but I'm doing it anyway because, damnit,
deadlifting just plain f---in' rulz.

And it being a macho thing is a problem why, precisely?
If I wanted to do a pussy thing I'd take up golf.

Agreed.
It's my favorite lift.
It's soul satisfying somehow.....
and it keeps me from wimping out when I have to actually USE the
strength I have gained by doing them when I have to do chores like
lifting measly 80 lb. bags of concrete mix! <lol>
It's like, duh, you can DL x-amount of weight.
An 80 lb. bag of redi-mix is easy. Right?
Why do those bags feel SO much heavier than that barbell? ;-)

Wrong...
Again.
It's only dangerous if you are stupid.
Hmmmmmm... maybe YOU should not be lifting weights at all?
You might hurt yourself! Oh my!

Deadlifting is only dangerous to dumbfucks. Say, are you really

compound words too.

You've got it backwards. As I've posted on this newsgroup before, I
have a hereditary weakness in this area. I had double inguinal hernia
surgery as a child, my father and his father had hernias, and both my
boys were operated on for the same thing at about 4.
The deadlifting I do _helps_, not hinders, my weakness in this area.
One of the only things you can do when you've got weakness in what's
essentially muscle-less connective tissue is to strengthen the
surrounding musculature and provide some support for the weakened area.
My hernia still bothers from time to time but only when I don't do
regular heavy lifting. This is where Pavel's "heavy enough" concept
really matters - I imagine I could hurt myself if I tried to deadlift
135 lbs. for a lot of reps but I keep my DL's to 70% and above, much of
the time 80% and above, and this helps me, not hinders me, in practicing
good, safe deadlift technique.
The proper technique is both safer _and_ more effective in moving a
heavy weight. A lighter weight doesn't require proper technique as much
and therefore is, IMHO, more likely, not less likely, to be associated
with a hernia or other injury while deadlifting.
Just my opinion.

I don't think he has much experience with Usenet. All those classic

Oddly enough, I'm not inclined to cut him any slack.
